Our laboratory traces its origins to the Laboratory of Biomedical Precision Engineering, established in 1980 within the Department of Precision Engineering at the University of Tokyo.
Today, we conduct education and research in biomedical engineering to support diagnosis, treatment, and basic medical science, in close collaboration with the Department of Precision Engineering, the Department of Bioengineering, and the Research Center for Medical Engineering and Technology at the Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo.
Our laboratory is led by three Principal Investigators (PIs) and brings together faculty members, researchers, and students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds, including physicians. By fostering collaboration across disciplinary boundaries, we pursue a broad range of research and development aimed at advancing medical technologies.
Our laboratory actively engages in collaborative research with clinical institutions and external research organizations, working to translate engineering innovations into practical solutions for medicine and healthcare.
We advance the research and development of next-generation medical devices by integrating medicine and engineering, grounded in surgical robotics, computer-assisted surgery, medical AI/image analysis, and biomechanics. Driven by clinical challenges, we conduct end-to-end research—from foundational technology to real-world implementation—through collaborative projects with clinicians and industry partners. We also emphasize practical application and regulatory science to bring safe, innovative medical technologies to life.
We study the interaction between acoustic waves and biological systems to uncover the mechanisms behind acoustic therapy, while pioneering innovative applications such as novel microscopy techniques and advanced optical delivery and detection methods.
Because bio-acoustic interactions take place on extremely short time scales, we actively develop our own ultra-high-speed imaging technologies. Beyond life sciences, our techniques enable the visualization and analysis of ultrafast phenomena across diverse fields—from physics and chemistry to materials science and electrical engineering.
Our group addresses a universal challenge in biological measurement—the trade-off with invasiveness—by interpreting raw sensor signals through physical AI. Through this unique methodology, we create innovative bio-measurement technologies. Our current projects include high-precision cardiac imaging from electrode signals, ultrasound devices with posture recognition, and robots designed for optimal control of flexible biological tissues. By unlocking untapped information hidden within biosensor signals, we contribute to the advancement of advanced medical care across diverse clinical fields.
